Wear Green or Else
Aside from the wearing of the green and the eating of the Irish cuisine, everybody is indeed Irish on March 17 when you see so many people wearing green in a variety of designs and disguises. Yes, wear green or be pinched! Well, of course, there is no malicious intent when someone pinches you for not wearing green since it is done in a most affectionate manner.
Still, after so many good-natured pinches and jokes, you will want to find anything green even if it just a green napkin. Better yet, you should get into the spirit of the Irish with St. Patrick Day costumes, which can be anything from a green top hat or leprechaun outfit for men and a green hair accessory or full-on sexy costume for the women.

You might wonder why you will be pinched for such a relatively minor transgression. Actually, pinching people not wearing green is a uniquely American tradition, which is said to have started from the Irish colonies in Boston during the 1700s. It was thought then that since not wearing green made you visible to the naughty leprechauns, you should be pinched to remind you to do wear the color or else.
Tradition being what it is in many instances, pinching people without even a hint of a St. Patrick Day’s costume has been carried into modern times. Other explanations have abounded, however, such as pinching because you are a non-conformist and because you need some green on you by way of a bruise.

Choose Your Green
No matter the reasons for pinching, it is still a good idea to wear an appropriate Patrick’s Day costume if only to be one with millions of people around the world celebrating the feast day. After all, the right outfit can really get you in on the vibe, the mood of the occasion. Think of it as Halloween in March although with green as the main color, not orange and black.
And when choosing from among Irish costumes, comfort is still the main consideration. And we are not just talking about the right fit because you have to be in your costume for hours a time, thus, comfort in the sense of being able to carry it off is also essential.
For example, if you are not comfortable wearing green tights ala dancers at River Dance, then just go for the green top hat or the Afro wig. Nobody will begrudge you if you keep the green to a minimum. Or if you are not one for short, sexy barmaid outfit, then even a green hair accessory or green sparkly ballet flats are okay.
Indeed, you will be enamored with St Patrick’s Day costumes so much that you will go green with envy when you cannot wear at least one of them. Thus, before March 17th or whatever date St. Patrick Day is established, be sure to at least have something green on you.

Nice range of costumes here…I have often gotten into the spirit of St Paddy’s day but have never managed to dress up for it. The best effort was to wear a huge Guinness hat with about 25 mates. We all wore the same hat and descended on a pub in Newcastle at 9 in the morning…left at 10 in the evening. We pretty much took the pub over and it was a great day. The Guinness was flowing …and a bit more besides.
This a great costume idea. I am sorry I missed the site for this year. I love the Lucky Charm costume and you can have some real fun with all the different chracters you have listed. I found your link on the history of St Patrick’s day really informative.
